WO=MEN in New York

Nadia bij de CSW69 NGO Briefing op de Permanente Vertegenwoordiging in New York Hier zit ik dan, in de openbare bibliotheek van New York (een toepasselijke tip van de collega’s van Atria), te proberen mijn reflecties over de CSW van de afgelopen twee weken op papier te zetten… Dat blijkt een uitdaging. Deze weken zaten vol hoogtepunten: hoera toch een – zelfs best mooi – slotdocument en dat met Saudi Arabië als voorzitter; Australische CEOs willen zich inzetten voor gendergelijkheid; inspirerende en hoopvolle gesprekken en strategiediscussies met veel verschillende organisaties en mensen; de wereld heeft er twee vrouwelijke presidenten bijgekregen (Namibië en Tunesië); en – verrassend – een busje met led screen met progressieve boodschappen dat langs de VN reed. Maar er waren ook veel dieptepunten: veel financiers verkeren in shock in plaats van klaar te staan om de gaten te vullen die vallen door de kaalslag in financiering vanuit Nederland, de VS en andere landen; toegang tot de CSW ...

Op donderdag 13 maart 2025, de vierde dag van de CSW, mag ik de bijeenkomst van het internationale High-Level Network dat zicht richt op gender-responsive policing bijwonen. Ik ben iets te vroeg in de ruimte onder in het VN-gebouw en ga voorzichtig op de achterste rij stoelen zitten. Een aantal commissarissen en politieofficieren komen binnen in uniform. Ik herken de Nederlandse politie-uniformen, de Chileense uniformen zijn groen. Het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden, Chili en Senegal zijn de drie landen die als pioniers het Netwerk leiden. De vergadering wordt geopend en er blijken wel 10 verschillende politiecommissarissen online aanwezig om iets te delen over de situatie en ervaringen in hun land rondom gender-responsive policing. In deze eerste vergadering van het Netwerk spreken landen uit om zich aan de missie van het Netwerk te committeren en worden hun Terms of Reference (TOR) aangenomen. During a lively briefing on 27 January 2025 for NGOs in the Netherlands about the 69th UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), experts from diverse backgrounds presented their pitches about key topics of importance for the delegation to keep in mind while engaging in the upcoming CSW negotiations. The sixth pitch was contributed by Ilse Wermink, Policy Advisor on Gender Peace and Security at PAX . For personal reasons she could not attend the meeting and her statement was read by Yara Bon, WO=MEN. PAX is an international organisation that has over 75 years of experience working with local organisations for global peace. MenEngage CSW66 statement As the 66th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66) recently concluded, it provides a key moment to reflect on the value contribution of intersectional feminist approaches in transforming patriarchal masculinities and work with men and boys for gender and climate justice. MenEngage Alliance members and partners followed and contributed to the CSW alongside other feminist organizations through statements , side events and influencing of the Agreed Conclusions.

Woensdag 14 maart was ons side-event over de zorg-werkverdeling in Europees perspectief: hoe kan zorg en werk gecombineerd worden in onder andere Nederland, Denemarken en Frankrijk en wat zijn de visies van organisaties zoals EIGE en MenEngage hierop? Wat kunnen we van elkaar leren?

At the CSW we talk a lot about emerging issues that affect women and men around the world. We also talk about the emerging themes that come up in our field of work. The role of men and boys in the fight for gender equality and empowerment of women has become increasingly popular topic. The importance of engaging men and boys is now officially recognized in the political declaration and several outcome document of CSW over the last years. Although the masculinities movement is not new at all, its visibility and the amount of attention for the role of men and boys is bigger than ever at this CSW.
