WO=MEN in New York

This March, I joined the Dutch delegation to the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) as a representative of the Nederlandse Vrouwen Raad (Dutch Women’s Council) at UN Headquarters in New York. I arrived on International Women’s Day and I’m still reflecting on what it meant to be there.   I feel deeply aware of the privilege it took to even enter that space. Many representatives were unable to attend , whether due to financial barriers or visa restrictions. That reality stayed with me throughout the week. What made this year particularly significant was witnessing the adoption of the Agreed Conclusions; an outcome adopted for the first time without consensus . Throughout the week, I engaged across a wide range of discussions, at UN Headquarters, the Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the UN, and events hosted by the European Union, UNDP, UN Women, UNFPA, the African Union, and the World Bank. On 12 March 2026, Lawyers for Lawyers, in collaboration with its partners, hosted “Voices from the frontline: women lawyers advancing access to justice,” as side event during the 70th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70). The CSW priority theme this year focused on ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls.   The event, co-sponsored by the International Bar Association Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI), the American Bar Association (ABA), and the Governments of Mexico, the Netherlands, and Canada, brought together speakers from different regions to reflect on the critical role of women lawyers in advancing justice. The discussion highlighted the systemic barriers, specific risks, and discrimination they face, while amplifying their voices and fostering collaboration to strengthen accountability and promote gender equality within the legal profession.   The voting results on the CSW70 Agreed Conclusions The Women’s Rights Caucus (WRC)—a global intersectional feminist coalition of more than 800 organizations, networks, and individuals convened by Fòs Feminista, Outright International, African Women’s Development and Communications Network (FEMNET), Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development (APWLD), and Young Feminist Caucus, that advocates for gender equality at the United Nations—welcomes the adoption of the CSW70 Agreed Conclusions under the priority theme: “Ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls, including by promoting inclusive and equitable legal systems, eliminating discriminatory laws, policies and practices, and addressing structural barriers.” WO=MEN and several of its members are actively engaged in the WRC.  The close of the seventieth session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women marked an unprecedented procedural departure.   Tot het allerlaatste moment bleef het spannend: zou de VN-Vrouwentop dit jaar worden geopend met een gezamenlijk overeengekomen slotdocument, of niet? Ieder jaar zijn er wel onzekere momenten. Jarenlang betekende dit dat de onderhandelingen complete nachten doorgingen totdat hongerige en vermoeide vertegenwoordigers van de VN Lidstaten dan – meestal – toch wel tot een consensus kwamen. Maar in de 70 jaar dat de Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), zoals dit proces eigenlijk heet, plaats vindt is het nog niet eerder tot een stemming gekomen.   Luid gejuich en geklap in de General Assembly hal van de Verenigde Staten bevestigt dat het uiteindelijk toch is gelukt: het slotdocument, de Agreed Conclusions genaamd, is in de mooie General Assembly aangenomen met een ruime meerderheid. Ngo-vertegenwoordiger Joyce Brummelman met Benjamin Nolan van de PV in de VN Deze week was het eindelijk zover: mijn reis naar de Verenigde Naties om van dichtbij te volgen hoe de afspraken en onderhandelingen rondom de Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) steeds meer vorm krijgen. Access to justice – toegang tot het recht – klinkt misschien als één thema, maar in werkelijkheid bestaat het uit talloze dimensies. Elk land heeft een andere juridische werkelijkheid, andere barrières, andere verhalen. Als NGO vertegenwoordiger mocht ik deze discussies mede volgen en luisteren naar wat landen, experts en activisten hierover te zeggen hebben.   Ondanks de sneeuwstorm landde ik dinsdagmiddag in New York en ging ik direct door naar de Nederlandse Vertegenwoordiging van de Verenigde Naties. De bijeenkomst vond plaats op het ministerie van OCW (onderwijs, cultuur en wetenschap) op 28 januari 2026. Alle 4 de pitches staan hier (in het Nederlands of Engels) op deze CSW blogpagina. De tweede pitch werd gegeven door Linda Brouwers namens de Unie van Soroptimistclubs . Als lid  van de CSW70 delegatie van Soroptimist International of Europa gaat Linda in maart 2026 naar New York. Anila Noor, New Women Connectors, at the CSW in New York The Commission on the Status of Women’s 69th session (CSW69), an influential global gathering on women’s rights, took place in New York between the 10th and 21st of March. This year’s focus at the global gathering is the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action , which is considered as one of the most progressive blueprints for women’s rights advancement. Leading up to this important event, New Women Connectors (NWC) held a webinar titled “We, Displaced Women: Leading the Transformation to Shape Peaceful Green Futures from Gender Justice to Climate Justice” in partnership with WO=MEN, as an effort to gather knowledge on the intersection of gender justice, climate change and displacement.
