Last week, UN Member States voted on the Agreed Conclusions at the 70th edition of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), in New York. It was an historic moment (normally the Agreed Conclusions are adopted by consensus) that marked the end of tense and tiresome negotiations. Progressive and conservative countries clashed over previously agreed UN language and commitments for women’s and girls’ access to justice worldwide. Staatssecretaris Judith Tielen bij de CSW70 briefing met Nederlandse ngo's De net geïnstalleerde staatssecretaris Judith Tielen heeft Onderwijs en Emancipatie in haar portefeuille. Nog geen twee weken in haar nieuwe functie, reist ze af naar de Commission on the Status of Women , oftewel de jaarlijkse VN-top voor vrouwenrechten. Een keuze die laat zien dat emancipatie en vrouwenrechten hoog op haar prioriteitenlijstje staan.  Traditiegetrouw heeft de aanwezige Nederlandse bewindspersoon tijdens de CSW een bijeenkomst op de Permanente Vertegenwoordiging met het Nederlandse maatschappelijk middenveld dat in New York is tijdens de conferentie. Deze bijeenkomst wordt georganiseerd door de delegatie in samenwerking met WO=MEN en Atria, een teken van de nauwe en constructieve samenwerking tussen overheid en maatschappelijk middenveld in dit proces.   Tot het allerlaatste moment bleef het spannend: zou de VN-Vrouwentop dit jaar worden geopend met een gezamenlijk overeengekomen slotdocument, of niet? Ieder jaar zijn er wel onzekere momenten. Jarenlang betekende dit dat de onderhandelingen complete nachten doorgingen totdat hongerige en vermoeide vertegenwoordigers van de VN Lidstaten dan – meestal – toch wel tot een consensus kwamen. Maar in de 70 jaar dat de Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), zoals dit proces eigenlijk heet, plaats vindt is het nog niet eerder tot een stemming gekomen.   Luid gejuich en geklap in de General Assembly hal van de Verenigde Staten bevestigt dat het uiteindelijk toch is gelukt: het slotdocument, de Agreed Conclusions genaamd, is in de mooie General Assembly aangenomen met een ruime meerderheid. This has never been easy. Women’s human rights have always been deeply contested.  But we have been able to work hand in hand with governments on agreements like the ICPD Programme of Action, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and the Sustainable Development Goals, catalyzing meaningful changes in the lives of women and girls globally. Foto: Sarah Meijer bij de CSW70 NGO briefing op het ministerie van OCW Sarah Meijer is gestart in haar rol als jongerenvertegenwoordiger voor CSW70 . Het centrale thema dit jaar is 'access to justice', oftewel toegang tot het recht. Een thema dat niet alleen gaat over de rechten die jonge vrouwen en meisjes op papier hebben, maar vooral over de barrières die zij in de praktijk tegenkomen op weg naar rechtvaardigheid.  Om die realiteit serieus te nemen, ben ik (Sarah Meijer) in gesprek gegaan met jongeren uit Nederland die op verschillende manieren in aanraking zijn gekomen met het rechtssysteem. Jongeren die hebben geprobeerd hun recht te halen, en jongeren die daar juist van afzagen. Niet omdat het hen niets deed, maar omdat de weg ernaartoe te complex, te ontmoedigend of te onveilig voelde. De bijeenkomst vond plaats op het ministerie van OCW (onderwijs, cultuur en wetenschap) op 28 januari 2026. Alle 4 de pitches staan hier (in het Nederlands of Engels) op deze CSW blogpagina. De eerste pitch werd gegeven door Linda Mans namens het Netwerk VN-Vrouwenverdrag . Linda is een van de vertegenwoordigers uit het maatschappelijk middenveld in Nederland die de komende week naar Geneve reizen voor de constructieve dialoog van het CEDAW Comite met Nederland. Het belang van CEDAW voor het bereiken van ‘access to justice’  Nederland heeft zich met de ratificatie van het VN-Vrouwenverdrag (CEDAW) verplicht tot het actief bevorderen van gendergelijkheid en het tegengaan van discriminatie van vrouwen.
