In 2020, het jubileumjaar van de Beijing Platform for Action, vond geen reguliere CSW sessie plaats in New York. Vanwege de COVID-19 pandemie werden alle side events en gerelateerde CSW bijeenkomsten op het laatste moment afgezegd. Er werd slechts een politieke verklaring uitgebracht. In reactie, bracht WO=MEN met haar leden en partners wel de volgende statement uit.

Statement van WO=MEN: Stem vrouwenrechten- en gendergelijkheidsorganisaties bij CSW cruciaal
 
Vijfentwintig jaar geleden stelden de leden van de Verenigde Naties (VN) in Beijing een revolutionaire agenda (Beijing Platform for Action) vast om wereldwijd vrouwenrechten en gendergelijkheid te verbeteren. Sindsdien komen VN-lidstaten ieder jaar in maart bijeen tijdens de Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) om de stand van zaken op te maken. Wat deze week de 25e viering en markering had moeten worden van deze agenda, werd 9 maart 2020 gereduceerd tot een formele sessie waarin lidstaten een gezamenlijke politieke verklaring onderschreven. Eerder geplande events met het maatschappelijk middenveld en regeringsdelegaties werden afgezegd wegens aanhoudende zorgen over de verspreiding van het coronavirus, COVID-19. 

WO=MEN respecteert het besluit om prioriteit te geven aan de gezondheid en veiligheid van alle deelnemers aan deze grote conferentie. Tegelijkertijd maken wij ons grote zorgen over het verlies van politiek en symbolisch momentum. De aanwezigheid van vrouwenrechten- en gendergelijkheidsorganisaties evenals progressieve overheidsdelegaties uit de hoofdsteden, is cruciaal om druk uit te oefenen op de uitvoer van het Beijing Platform for Action. Met de politieke verklaring die maandag 9 maart 2020 uitging, hadden regeringen de gelegenheid om nieuwe uitdagingen te identificeren en aan te pakken, en de weg te effenen voor een nieuwe internationale agenda voor gendergelijkheid. De beperkte reikwijdte van de politieke verklaring toont echter aan dat deze gelegenheid niet is aangegrepen.

Niet alleen is de CSW cruciaal om de wereldwijde normen rond vrouwenrechten en gendergelijkheid hoog te houden. Ook is het een cruciaal platform voor het maatschappelijk middenveld en progressieve overheden om elkaar te ontmoeten, strategieën af te stemmen en samen te kijken naar de lokale vertaling van onze rechten. Zodat de implementatie van vrouwenrechten en gendergelijkheid een gedeelde en goed verankerde verantwoordelijkheid wordt.  

Het 25-jarige jubileum van Beijing is pas begonnen. De feministische beweging en haar partners kunnen nog steeds mooie dingen bereiken voor een progressieve en rechtvaardige agenda voor gendergelijkheid ‘that leaves no one behind’. Naast de CSW staan er dit jaar nog andere belangrijke momenten op de rol die de mogelijkheid bieden om middelen en politieke wil te laten zien. Waaronder de viering van 5 jaar Duurzame Ontwikkelingsdoelen, 20 jaar Vrouwen, Vrede & Veiligheid en de Generation Equality Forums in Mexico en Parijs. 

WO=MEN en haar leden en partners roepen daarom de Nederlandse overheid en politiek op:
  • Blijf in VN- en EU-gremia het belang benadrukken van een volledige CSW later dit jaar. 
  • Ondersteun de maximale en betekenisvolle participatie van het Nederlandse maatschappelijk middenveld en haar partners in onder andere fragiele staten. Bijvoorbeeld door vrouwenrechtenorganisaties en -activisten te helpen nieuwe visa te verkrijgen en opnieuw tickets en hotels te boeken om naar New York te kunnen afreizen. Maar ook door virtuele ontmoeting op afstand mogelijk te maken. 
  • Verbeter de transparantie rond de overige internationale en regionale Beijingprocessen en ondersteun ook daar de betekenisvolle participatie van het maatschappelijk middenveld.

ARTivism for Change: Creativity as Resistance at CSW69

Over two days, March 12 and 13, 2025, artists, activists, and allies transformed the space into dynamic real-life canvases of empowerment, solidarity, and cultural and political resistance.   In the main space of the Blue Gallery participants engaged with various stations, including Button Making , Journaling with Art , Drawing , and Protest Sign Making . "Beat back the radicals!"

“We will beat back the radicals and we will fight all their falsehoods and we will help as best we can all the faithful UN delegations trying to help the unborn child. But, the Friday Fax and our presence at UN headquarters is not free. In fact, it is terribly expensive. Would you be able to make a sacrificial donation to our work of $500? $100? $50?” This quote is from a newsletter of an American based organization working to stop any agreement at the UN that might possibly be understood to mean that women can have a choice in their  reproduction. It is quite ironic to see the violence in the language, beat back the radicals, from a group who are working at the UN meeting devoted to ending Violence Against Women.
