CSW66: Jonge klimaatactivisten Esin en Valérie aan het woord

 Wij zijn Esin Erdoğan en Valérie Mendes de León, vrijwilligers bij de Jonge Klimaatbeweging. Dit jaar nemen wij namens de Jonge Klimaatbeweging voor het eerst deel aan de CSW, omdat het thema dit jaar - klimaat en milieu - er een is die veel jongeren in Nederland nauw aan het hart gaat. We delen hier onze ervaring en inzichten over het belang van de jongerenstem tijdens de CSW en de weg hiernaartoe.

Jonge experts
Als Jonge Klimaatbeweging vertegenwoordigen we de stem van meer dan 100.000 jongeren richting de overheid en de politiek omtrent klimaatbeleid. Inclusief klimaatbeleid is een onderwerp dat onze jonge achterban ontzettend belangrijk vindt. En vanuit onze eigen expertise op ecofeminisme was het dan ook mooi dat we zo direct konden bijdragen aan de totstandkoming van de jongerenvisie op de Zero Draft*).

Om tafel met de delegatie
Wat wij zo interessant vonden aan dit proces, is dat we al direct om te tafel konden zitten met de delegaties en andere ngo’s uit het maatschappelijke middenveld. Naast dat we zelf het een en ander wilden vertellen, hebben we vooral veel geleerd over de verschillende thema’s van de CSW. Dat vonden we het mooist aan deze beweging, dat iedereen elkaar helpt, met elkaar meedenkt en echt samenwerkt om een zo sterk en inclusief mogelijk stuk neer te zetten.

'Niks over ons zonder ons'
Naast dat we hebben meegedacht met de Nederlandse delegatie, hebben we ook in een bijeenkomst met alleen jongerenpartijen onze stem kunnen laten horen. Vanuit de Jonge Klimaatbeweging hebben we de focus gelegd op meer structurele jongerenparticipatie en meer jong leiderschap op klimaatthema’s. Wij vinden het namelijk essentieel dat de generatie voor wie beleid wordt geschreven, daar ook inspraak in heeft.

CSW Formal Side Event
Daarom kijken we er ook naar uit om op 15 maart onze stem te laten horen tijdens het (virtuele) officiële side-event, waar we samen met WECF, Atria, de Nederlandse Vrouwenraad en WO=MEN spreken. Wij gaan het hier hebben over hoe je jongeren zo goed mogelijk kan betrekken bij klimaatbeleid, om een zo inclusief mogelijke stem te laten horen.

*) De Zero Draft is de eerste conceptversie van het uiteindelijke slotdocument van de Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). Dit is het document waar de VN lidstaten wekenlang (al voor de CSW begint) met elkaar over onderhandelen. Er staan onder andere aanbevelingen in die de lidstaten en anderen zouden moeten uitvoeren op het hoofdthema.

ARTivism for Change: Creativity as Resistance at CSW69

Artwork "Who can I trust with my story?" from ArtVism in Uganda During the 69th CSW, the Our Voices Our Futures (OVOF) consortium organised a creative ARTivism for Change space where bold protest sign-making, intimate film screenings, and thought-provoking feminist dialogues blended together. Over two days, March 12 and 13, 2025, artists, activists, and allies transformed the space into dynamic real-life canvases of empowerment, solidarity, and cultural and political resistance.   In the main space of the Blue Gallery participants engaged with various stations, including Button Making , Journaling with Art , Drawing , and Protest Sign Making . Participants moved between activities, creating powerful messages of resistance and hope. The creativity extended beyond the activities themselves. "Beat back the radicals!"

“We will beat back the radicals and we will fight all their falsehoods and we will help as best we can all the faithful UN delegations trying to help the unborn child. But, the Friday Fax and our presence at UN headquarters is not free. In fact, it is terribly expensive. Would you be able to make a sacrificial donation to our work of $500? $100? $50?” This quote is from a newsletter of an American based organization working to stop any agreement at the UN that might possibly be understood to mean that women can have a choice in their  reproduction. It is quite ironic to see the violence in the language, beat back the radicals, from a group who are working at the UN meeting devoted to ending Violence Against Women. Being here at the UN makes you feel in your body and soul that maintaining and advancing freedom of choice for women (and men) is a battle and not everyone fights fair.
