CSW67 Pitch: Gender Just Water Solutions

Tijdens de NGO briefing op 26 januari 2023 werd er gepitcht aan de Nederlandse CSW67 delegatie met aanbevelingen vanuit het maatschappelijk middenveld. Zij hadden een duidelijke boodschap: betrek ons en neem mensenrechten in digitale ruimten serieus.

Janna Lenders, Assistant Advocacy Officer bij Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF), ziet mogelijkheden in het verbinden van technologie en innvatie, gendergelijkheid en de wereldwijde watercrisis.

"WECF en Simavi zien de aankomende CSW als het moment om de thema’s digitalisering en innovatie, gendergelijkheid, en de door klimaatverandering escalerende wereldwijde watercrisis bij elkaar te brengen. Hierdoor kunnen we een brug slaan naar de UN Water Conference. Het biedt ons een mogelijkheid om de SDG’s 5, 6 en 9 te verbinden en de bestaande uitdagingen met een intersectionele blik aan te gaan.   80% van alle klimaatrampen ter wereld is gerelateerd aan water, iets wat grote impact heeft op mensenrechten wereldwijd, in het bijzonder op die van vrouwen en meisjes, in al hun diversiteit. Tegelijkertijd zijn dezelfde vrouwen leidend in innovatieve en technologische oplossingen wat betreft klimaat- en genderrechtvaardigheid en de watercrisis.   Zuidelijke partners moeten centraal staan tijdens de CSW. Daarom werken WECF en Simavi samen met Trupti Jain en Sareen Malik. Met technologische gender-inclusieve innovaties op het gebied van water dragen zij bij aan het creëren van sociale cohesie, veiligheid en autonomie. Trupti Jain, een partner in India, zet vrouwen uit gemarginaliseerde gemeenschappen centraal in haar sociale onderneming Bhungroo en bevordert zo waterveiligheid in de regio. Dit vergroot het gevoel van eigenaarschap van deze vrouwen. Sareen Malik leidt een pan-Afrikaanse organisatie om toegang tot water en sanitatie te verbeteren, waardoor er een veiligere omgeving voor vrouwen en meisjes wordt gecreëerd.  Deze relatief eenvoudige technologische innovaties, tevens schaalbaar, hebben grote invloed op de kansen van vrouwen en meisjes in de regio. Tijdens de CSW vragen wij daarom, met behulp van deze vrouwen, aandacht voor ‘’Gender Just Water Solutions’’."

ARTivism for Change: Creativity as Resistance at CSW69

Women in Politics: Choosing between Ambition and Safety?

At the CSW69 NGO Forum's session Accelerating Progress By Addressing Barriers To Leadership And Democratic Participation examples of barriers for participation and programs and policies that promote inclusion where shared by speakers from Canada, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Evidence shows that barriers such as limited access to mentors and networks, lack of flexible work arrangements, and harassment and discrimination all limit women's participation and advancement in leadership roles. “In a democratic society, it is necessary to display a fair distribution of men and women at all levels of decision-making,” Jenny Gulamani-Abdulla, Co-Founder of the Canadian Federation For Citizenship (CFC), shared. Access Denied Campaign

Following many concerns and calls for support received from activists who were not able to come to New York, WO=MEN – jointly with members and partners - took the initiative to launch a campaign to call attention to the exclusion of defenders from meaningfully participating in the CSW: ACCESS DENIED! “Without the active participation of women and the incorporation of women’s perspective at all levels of decision-making, the goals of equality, development and peace cannot be achieved.” - Beijing Platform for Action The ACCESS DENIED campaign seeks to address the stark contrast between Beijing’s call for participation of women back in 1995 already and the reality of exclusion faced by many activists who had wished to be here at this 30 year anniversary of Beijing.
