Na een rustige ochtend en een wandeling om weer aan New York te wennen, op naar het VN gebouw om me te laten registreren. Van eerdere bezoeken weet ik dat de registratie lang kan duren. Ik ben om half drie bij de visitor’s ingang van de VN. De VN heeft tegenwoordig een uitgebreide veiligheidsprocedure, dus alle jassen en tassen moeten door het scanapparaat. Het poortjes waar ik doorstap begint hard te piepen. Mijn haarspeld moet uit en dan mag ik toch naar binnen.

Binnen staat een lange rij. Alle mensen die in de rij staan zijn aangesloten bij een organisatie met ecosoc status en hebben zich voor de deadline in december 2008 aangemeld voor de CSW vergadering. We hebben allemaal een aanmeldingsbrief. Met die brief gaan we naar loket een.

Bij loket een print een aardige dame een formulier voor je uit. Daarna mag je terug in de rij. Gelukkig tref ik daar collega’s Carmen en Daniela van Oxfam Novib. Dat maakt het wachten minder saai. Na ruim een uur mag ik plaats nemen aan een tafeltje en verwerkt een andere dame, tot mijn verrassing de gegevens die op mijn formulier staat handmatig opnieuw in de computer. Vervolgens neemt ze een foto. Nog even wachten en dan krijg ik de belangrijke tijdelijke VN pas aan een handige ketting. Het is vier uur als ik de deur uitloop. Blij dat ik dit niet op maandagochtend moet doen want dan is het vast veel drukker.

Access Denied Campaign

Following many concerns and calls for support received from activists who were not able to come to New York, WO=MEN – jointly with members and partners - took the initiative to launch a campaign to call attention to the exclusion of defenders from meaningfully participating in the CSW: ACCESS DENIED! “Without the active participation of women and the incorporation of women’s perspective at all levels of decision-making, the goals of equality, development and peace cannot be achieved.” - Beijing Platform for Action The ACCESS DENIED campaign seeks to address the stark contrast between Beijing’s call for participation of women back in 1995 already and the reality of exclusion faced by many activists who had wished to be here at this 30 year anniversary of Beijing.
