Launch of database on violence against women

Vandaag viert de CSW internationale vrouwendag omdat 8 maart in het weekeinde valt, met een sessie en een craft markt in het church building. Een van de onderdelen van de het vieren van internationale Vrouwendag is het lanceren van een database over geweld tegen vrouwen. Mede op initiatief van Nederland en Frankrijk, heeft de Algemene Vergadering van de Verenigde Naties, de Division for the Advancement of Women, DAW, gevraagt een database op te zetten. In de database verzamelt men zoveel mogelijke alle wetgeving en acties die de lidstaten van de VN ondernemen om geweld tegen vrouwen te stoppen. Het doel van de database is het makkelijker te maken om te leren van elkaar, vergelijkingen te maken en onderzoek te doen naar best practices. De lancering van de database maakt nogmaals duidelijk dat de Verenigde Naties een belangrijk platform is voor het delen van informatie op een wereldwijd niveau. Via de lobby van vrouwenrechten NGO’s is het onderwerp Violence Against Women op de politiek agenda gekomen en gebleven. Een initiatief dat van Frankrijk en Nederland afkomstig is en nu gelanceerd wordt door de Nederlandse Permanenente vertegenwoordiger, ambassadeur de Heer Majoor. Een en ander gaat weer gepaard met een panelsessie waar Carolyn Hannan mij weer opvalt vanwege haar heldere kordate en onomwonden teksten. Zij is de directeur van DAW, de afdeling over de ontwikkeling van vrouwen, bij de UN. Ze vertelt dat je op de database informatie vindt over rechten, beleid, instellingen en organisties, preventie, trainingen en opleidigen, research data en allerlei netwerken en samenwerkingsverbanden op dit terrein. Je kunt de informatie per land, per type wet, per initiatief of good-practise vinden in de zes talen die gangbaar zijn bij de UN en de taal waarmee de informatie is gegeven. Het idee is natuurlijk elkaar aan te sporen en niet achter te blijven, beleid te ontlokken en oplossingen bij elkaar te vinden en te verbeteren. Druk op de ketel te houden en permanent met elkaar de situatie te verbeteren. Er zijn nog teveel gaten tussen lokale actuele en nationale frameworks aan de ene kant en de internationale community anderszijds. Zie www.un.org/csw/database. "

ARTivism for Change: Creativity as Resistance at CSW69

Artwork "Who can I trust with my story?" from ArtVism in Uganda During the 69th CSW, the Our Voices Our Futures (OVOF) consortium organised a creative ARTivism for Change space where bold protest sign-making, intimate film screenings, and thought-provoking feminist dialogues blended together. Over two days, March 12 and 13, 2025, artists, activists, and allies transformed the space into dynamic real-life canvases of empowerment, solidarity, and cultural and political resistance.   In the main space of the Blue Gallery participants engaged with various stations, including Button Making , Journaling with Art , Drawing , and Protest Sign Making . Participants moved between activities, creating powerful messages of resistance and hope. The creativity extended beyond the activities themselves. "Beat back the radicals!"

“We will beat back the radicals and we will fight all their falsehoods and we will help as best we can all the faithful UN delegations trying to help the unborn child. But, the Friday Fax and our presence at UN headquarters is not free. In fact, it is terribly expensive. Would you be able to make a sacrificial donation to our work of $500? $100? $50?” This quote is from a newsletter of an American based organization working to stop any agreement at the UN that might possibly be understood to mean that women can have a choice in their  reproduction. It is quite ironic to see the violence in the language, beat back the radicals, from a group who are working at the UN meeting devoted to ending Violence Against Women. Being here at the UN makes you feel in your body and soul that maintaining and advancing freedom of choice for women (and men) is a battle and not everyone fights fair.
