Hardlopen in New York

Marian ter Haar, werkzaam bij NISB en de gekozen Nederlandse Vrouwenvertegenwoordigster bij de Algemene Vergadering van de Verenigde Naties 2009, bezoekt de CSW ter voorbereiding van haar werk tijdens de algemene vergadering. Haar thema is empowerment van vrouwen door sport en beweging. Ook zij deelt op de wo=men blog haar gedachten en ervaringen.

"Ik groet de nachtportier van het hotel, eindelijk kan ik los, hardlopen in Manhattan. De sneeuw is geruimd, om half zeven zijn de stoepen nog redelijk vrij. Het vriest nog wel maar daar voor heb ik een extra laagje aan.

Het is grappig, ik kan hier totaal vreemd, de weg in elk geval niet kwijt raken, wat me in Bennekom - als ik tussen de middag een loopje ga doen- geregeld overkomt. Hier pak ik gewoon je Avenue en dan tel je de blokken aan de hand van het nummer van de zijstraten. Ik startte op de East 40th street en laat me helemaal tot aan de Hudson zakken om daar nu eens niet naar links richting UN te lopen maar naar rechts richting ‘down town’, het zuiden van het eiland.

Het gaat lekker, ik voel me fit. Er is vermaak genoeg, van alles te zien. Opvallend veel drogisterijen hier, meer dan groente winkels. Ze zijn erg met hun gezondheid en vooral hun uiterlijk bezig de Amerikanen op een vermakelijke manier. Behalve drogisterijen vol met pillen en make-up zijn er langs de route ook veel ‘nailshops’, ik heb er in die driekwartier toch zeker acht geteld. Kappers doen hier ook meer dan knippen en verven, je kunt er complete massages and facials krijgen, fascinerend.

Een maal aangekomen tot de 18th street besluit ik de terug weg te beginnen, ik ga nu eerder omhoog en loop via de Third Avenue terug. Wat hier parkjes heten mag geen naam hebben, de vaak imposante hekken onttrekken de vier bomen en zes bankjes net niet aan het zicht. Ik kom twee andere lopers tegen, een chinees van een jaar of veertig en een jonge meid, beiden lekker fit en slank. Ze hebben het niet echt nodig, veel anderen die ik tegen kom weer wel. Niet te geloven wat zich hier aan vetmassa op de weg begeeft, schuifelt. Op de tv heb ik een afvalshow met alles er op en er aan gezien, vreselijk...
