Lunch en overleg bij de Permanente Vertegenwoordiging

“Rond de lunch verzamelden we ons in het Vienna cafe in het VN gebouw. Door heel New York staan mensen met hun sigaret op straat, zelfs in de sneeuwstorm. In het Vienna cafe staat het bord op de foto. Toch wordt er in het Vienna cafe flink op los gerookt! Mijn kleren stonken na een half uur Vienna gewoon.

Alle Nederlandse NGO vertegenwoordigers waren uitgenodigd bij de Permanente Vertegenwoordiging van Nederland bij de Verenigde Naties om te lunchen, maar vooral ook van gedachte te wisselen over de draft agreed conclusions. Van de Nederlandse delegatie Carlien Scheele en Anita de Groot van de directie emancipatie van het ministerie van OCW en PV diplomaat Mira Woldberg kregen we de laatste stand van zaken te horen over de onderhandelingen over de draft binnen de Europese Unie, EU.

Daar was men al weer tegen een oude EU probleem aangelopen. Een aantal EU landen met aan het hoofd Malta willen absoluut geen tekst die zou kunnen worden opgevat als steun aan abortus. Dat betekent in de praktijk dat vaak dat het benoemen van sexual and reproductive rights taboe is.

Als NGO’s gaven we thema’s aan die in de draft statement ontbreken of die scherper geformuleerd kunnen worden. Om de visie van de Nederlandse NGO’s helder over te dragen, bleven Nathalie Lasslop, Ines Oribio de Castro (van E-quality) en ik de hele middag in de vergaderzaal van de PV om onze punten duidelijk te verwerken in de draft agreed conclusions.
Vanaf vandaag gaat de strijd om de punten en komma’s beginnen! Als NGO’s gaan we vooral opletten of er geen schadelijke dingen inkomen die de rechten van vrouwen terugdraaien.

`Hoe werkt dat dan in zo’n gemende NGO-delegatie?
Gisteren is er gesproken met de officiële NL-delegatie (twee dames van directie Emancipatie van OC&W en een ondersteuner van de Permanente Vertegenwoordiger van NL hier bij de VN) en dat is plezierig verlopen. Dat wil zoveel zeggen als dat er overeenstemming is over de grote lijnen en de taal waarin eventuele wijzigingen of uitbreidingen van de teksten vervat worden. In onze NGO-delegatie zijn er verschillende achterbannen die weer betrokken worden bij onze suggesties. Zo heeft Nathalie van Cordaid een levendig netwerk van mensen betrokken bij de grassroots projecten rond de zorg bij AIDS. Interessante aanvullende suggesties komen vaak uit die hoek. Nathalie, Loeky en Ines van E-quality hebben tot laat zitten schaven aan de tekst, het is ze goed gelukt, iedereen is er blij mee.

ARTivism for Change: Creativity as Resistance at CSW69

Artwork "Who can I trust with my story?" from ArtVism in Uganda During the 69th CSW, the Our Voices Our Futures (OVOF) consortium organised a creative ARTivism for Change space where bold protest sign-making, intimate film screenings, and thought-provoking feminist dialogues blended together. Over two days, March 12 and 13, 2025, artists, activists, and allies transformed the space into dynamic real-life canvases of empowerment, solidarity, and cultural and political resistance.   In the main space of the Blue Gallery participants engaged with various stations, including Button Making , Journaling with Art , Drawing , and Protest Sign Making . "Beat back the radicals!"

“We will beat back the radicals and we will fight all their falsehoods and we will help as best we can all the faithful UN delegations trying to help the unborn child. But, the Friday Fax and our presence at UN headquarters is not free. In fact, it is terribly expensive. Would you be able to make a sacrificial donation to our work of $500? $100? $50?” This quote is from a newsletter of an American based organization working to stop any agreement at the UN that might possibly be understood to mean that women can have a choice in their  reproduction. It is quite ironic to see the violence in the language, beat back the radicals, from a group who are working at the UN meeting devoted to ending Violence Against Women. Being here at the UN makes you feel in your body and soul that maintaining and advancing freedom of choice for women (and men) is a battle and not everyone fights fair.
