30 jaar VN vrouwenverdrag

“Omdat Aim for human rights actief is binnen het Nederlandse Netwerk VN-vrouwenverdrag, (Het netwerk coördineert de totstandkoming van de Nederlandse schaduwrapportage aan de VN vrouwenverdrag comité) bezocht ik vandaag het side event waarop een start werd gemaakt met de viering van de 30ste verjaardag van het verdrag en de 10de verjaardag van het optionele protocol.
De sprekers herinnerde ons eraan hoeveel er is veranderd is in de afgelopen jaren. Het comite is veel professioneler gaan werken, waardoor er geen achterstand is in het bespreken van landenrapportages. Het Nederlandse regeringsrapport en de schaduwrapportage worden in Januari 2010 besproken. Omdat men op schema is, neemt het VN vrouwenverdrag comite nu actief contact op met landen die hun rapportage verplichting niet nakomen. Men geeft die landen nog ongeveer 2 jaar de tijd te reageren, maar hoort men dan nog niets dan gaat het comite toch over tot bespreking van de situatie in dat land.

UNIFEM kondigde aan regionale bijeenkomsten te willen organiseren om de viering van 30 jaar VN-vrouwenverdrag kracht bij te zetten. Alle sprekers benadrukten dat het VN-vrouwenverdrag bindende verplichtingen oplegt aan de lidstaten en dat die de plicht hebben op grond van het verdrag discriminatie van vrouwen actief te bestrijden. “Loeky Droesen

ARTivism for Change: Creativity as Resistance at CSW69

Artwork "Who can I trust with my story?" from ArtVism in Uganda During the 69th CSW, the Our Voices Our Futures (OVOF) consortium organised a creative ARTivism for Change space where bold protest sign-making, intimate film screenings, and thought-provoking feminist dialogues blended together. "Beat back the radicals!"

“We will beat back the radicals and we will fight all their falsehoods and we will help as best we can all the faithful UN delegations trying to help the unborn child. But, the Friday Fax and our presence at UN headquarters is not free. In fact, it is terribly expensive. Would you be able to make a sacrificial donation to our work of $500? $100? $50?” This quote is from a newsletter of an American based organization working to stop any agreement at the UN that might possibly be understood to mean that women can have a choice in their  reproduction. It is quite ironic to see the violence in the language, beat back the radicals, from a group who are working at the UN meeting devoted to ending Violence Against Women.
